Why Your Cat Needs a Scratching Post
Cats, known for their soft fur, beautiful eyes and engaging personalities also have sharp little razors on their paws!
These claws are necessary to all cats’ health and here are the reasons why you should provide a scratching post for your feline friend.
- Cats need to mark their territory; it’s instinct. Cats have scent glands in their paws and whenever your cat scratches something, that scent is transferred to that area creating a marker for other cats. Even if you only have one cat, this is something your cat will instinctually do and having a place to mark their territory will help make your cat happy.
- Scratch posts are a way to keep your cat entertained. When your cat gets the “zoomies” having access to a scratch post will help them get that energy out and helps to keep them away from other furniture.
- Scratch posts can provide exercise, especially if you have a post that has different levels to climb on.
- We all know how sharp cat claws are, and scratch posts help to groom those claws. The sisal on posts can naturally remove the outer layers of their nails keeping them clean and healthy.
What should you consider when looking for a scratching post?
- Cats love to be up high. Their ancestors used that trick to have a good vantage point for predators and our domestic cats still have that desire. Ideally, your post should be at least 3 feet tall and if you have the space, try to find one with different levels too.
- Scratch posts should be strong and solid so it can’t fall over. Most are made of wood and are covered with carpet and often include cardboard and rope.
- Some scratch posts have additional bells & whistles like dangling balls, or hideaways. Consider what your cat likes best. Is it a young cat who likes to play, or an older cat who would rather have a private space to nap.
