Why we love mixed breed dogs
July 31 marks National Mutt Day and it’s a great opportunity to look at the ways mixed-breed dogs enrich our lives and are a great choice for a pet.
- Did you know that mixed breed dogs are generally healthier? Some breeds have genetic health problems that have followed the pure bloodlines, but mixed breeds have a lower chance of developing those issues. Mixed breed dogs are often more intelligent!
- Mixed breed dogs are most often those found in pet shelters and when you adopt a shelter pet, you’re literally saving a life.
- Mutts make great family pets because their gene pool makes them more adaptable. Purebred dogs are often bred for very specific tasks and introducing a purebred dog into an environment that doesn’t fit their personality can be challenging. Mixed breed dogs are better able to fit into a variety of situations.
- Mutts are great for first-time pet owners, for several reasons. They’re less expensive, they’re easier to train because of their desire to please and their not as high-maintenance as purebred pups.
- Mixed breed dogs come in all shapes and sizes to suit everyone’s needs. A visit to a shelter will give you many options and a chance to find the perfect companion for you.
