Why Playing is Important to Your Dog

If you’ve ever seen your dog look at you wide-eyed, crouched down, anticipating a round of playtime, you’ll know that for dogs, playing is nearly as important as breathing.  It’s not just a good way to spend some time but it’s essential to their physical and mental health too.  Dogs are social creatures and love interacting with their best friends.

Here are four reasons why playing is so important.

  • As already noted, play improves physical health. Playing expends energy and builds stamina and muscle. Dogs need at least 30 minutes of exercise each day to stay fit although some high-energy breeds may require more than that.  Always consider the weather and don’t take your pet outdoors in extreme temperatures.
  • It improves mental health.  Have you heard the saying “a tired dog is a happy dog”? It’s true.  A dog that gets regular play will sleep better and have a better outlook on life. Dogs can get bored too and regular enrichment will keep your pup excited for each new day. Regular play can also help dogs who are anxious. Playtime is happy time.
  • Playing helps keep your dog sharp. Use playtime to teach new tricks, or agility. Or offer your dog scent games and puzzles. Being offered new challenges will keep your dog curious and ready to try new things.
  • Your bond will get stronger. You already love each other, but playtime makes that bond stronger. You gain trust, and doing fun things together reminds your dog that when he’s with you, it’s always a good time.
