Why birds need toys

Did you know that when animals play, they’re not only being entertained and are keeping their mind sharp, they’re also learning a variety of skills? Playing fulfills instincts, provides exercise and in the case of birds, helps keep the beak busy.  So, playing is vital to your bird’s health and happiness.

Just like a tired dog is a happy dog, an enriched bird is a happy bird. Toys ensure your bird doesn’t get bored and can help solve behavioural issues.

Birds have a natural instinct tear things up, chew and shred so some of the toys you choose should allow your bird to do that. Toys that fulfill that need are often made of paper and wood and here are some options to consider.

Birds also have a strong need to forage. In the wild, that’s the time spent flying around and looking for food. In a domestic situation your bird can’t do that but still has the desire. Foraging toys like these will encourage your bird to look, find and retrieve.

To keep your pet active you should also include toys like ropes, swings and ladders to help keep him active and fit.

Just remember that variety will be the key.  Offer your bird several types of toys that have different colors, textures, sounds, sizes and taste and make sure to match the size of toy to the size of your bird.
