Pet Bird Care

Having a pet bird seems somewhat exotic. Parrots, cockatiels and conures bring tropical colours and sounds into your home and they make great pets, but if you’re a first-time bird-owner here are some things you need to know.

Pet birds are intelligent and active creatures and they like to have stimulation and to be part of the family.  When choosing the location for the cage, make sure it’s placed in an area where activity happens. Some bird owners like to allow the bird to fly freely around the home for exercise. If you choose to do the same, make sure to close windows and doors and be aware of dangers like ceiling fans and hot stoves.

To avoid birdy boredom, try to offer an assortment of toys. They offer mental and physical enrichment, exercise and beak wear but should be designed specifically for birds. You can either purchase toys at your favourite pet store, or choose natural items liked branches, pinecones or rope. Some birds like to tear paper while others might enjoy a piece of corn.

Cages should be as large as possible. When purchasing, consider how easy it is to clean and ensure it’s made of non-toxic materials.

Birds love to perch and may be “perch-achased” or simply made from pesticide-free natural wood branches. Perches should be replaced frequently when they become worn, soiled or damaged. Perches should be placed so that droppings do not fall into water dishes.

The use of wide bowls rather than deep cups display the food attractively and may encourage the bird to eat new items. Placing the food at the opposite end of the cage from the water will ensure that the bird gets some exercise between eating and drinking.

Schedule weekly thorough cleanings of the cage in addition to daily cleaning of the cage floor and bowls.

Newspapers, paper towels, wood chips, chopped corn cobs, kitty litter, or sand can all act as cage liners and substrate. The key is to keep the floor clean to avoid growth of bacteria.

Proper diet is critical for overall health in every species. The easiest way to feed your bird is to use commercially formulated diets especially made for pet birds.

Most birds enjoy daily bathing and spend a great deal of time keeping their feathers in prime condition. Some will bathe in a dish or bowl, some prefer a shower or bathing under the faucet.
