My House is Your House – Helping Your Dog Adjust to Their New Home
Welcoming a new dog into your home is a very exciting time in your life, but it does come with challenges. Whether your new pet is older or a puppy, there will be a few things to consider while transitioning them into their new space.
Creature Comforts
You’re going to want your dog to have a comfortable space both inside and out, where they will know that they are safe. Create this space by including food, treats, bedding, or toys. Have this space set up prior to bringing them home, so that they’ll know where it is from the beginning. Help them learn their outside space by guiding them on a lead, and showing them where they can do their business, as well as play.
Routine
Establish a routine early on for feeding, walks, potty time, and playtime. Having a regular schedule helps your dog to make sense of their day and will help them settle in more quickly.
Be Patient
If possible, stay at home for the first few days to help your pet settle in with you there to comfort him. It also gives you an opportunity to take him for extra walks if he has nervous energy, and for the two of you to create a bond. Remember that it may take a few weeks for your pet to feel fully comfortable in his new space.
