Keeping your pets safe when there are fireworks

Do you have a pet that’s afraid of fireworks, thunder or other loud noises? Many pets are. And maybe you’ve seen your pet frozen in fear, struggling to get away or even bolting. It’s important to know what to do and how to prepare for these situations because every year pets are lost because they run away in fear. Here are some tips to help you and your pet cope with those loud noises.

Plan ahead. Be aware of when fireworks are scheduled to take place in your area and watch the weather forecast so you know when thunder may be imminent. Make sure your pet has a place where he feels safe. This could be his crate, a quiet room, or even a spot on the couch near you. Just be sure your pet knows that is his happy place and is an area with positive experiences.

How to help dogs:

  • Use music. Playing calming or classical music can help your pet remain calm and also distract him from the noises outside.
  • Exercise your pet. Try to get your exercise session completed before the fireworks start so you won’t be outside when they’re set off.
  • Try to be at home. Since your presence will give your pet the most comfort, try to be at home when the fireworks happen.
  • Close windows and curtains to muffle the noise.
  • Pretend it’s not happening. Ignore the fireworks and see if your dog will play with a toy.
  • Try a pheremone diffuser or hemp oil formulated for pets to help calm him down.

How to help cats:

  • Provide hiding places (your cat may already have a place he likes to go when he’s afraid)
  • Let your cat stay in his safe place until he’s ready to come out
  • Keep your cat inside so he can’t run away
  • Make sure your cat is wearing ID or is microchipped in case he gets lost

How to help small animals:

  • Cover their cages with a blanket to help soundproof it but leave an area where your pets can look out
  • Make sure they have fresh bedding to burrow in
  • If it’s feasible, bring them inside for a short time

Keeping horses safe:

  • Stay up to date on possible fireworks or weather events
  • Stay calm because your horse will notice if you’re anxious
  • Stick to your regular routine
