Foods Your Cat Should Never Eat

Have you ever had your cat stare at you longingly while you enjoyed that delicious dinner you just cooked?  As much as you’d like to share, sometimes it’s best to just save all of the good food for yourself. There are some foods you should never feed your cat and we’ve compiled this easy list.

  • Alcohol can cause vomiting or breathing problems, but worse it could cause a coma or death.
  • Chocolate can cause diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, coma and death.
  • Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure.
  • Liver can cause poisoning from too much Vitamin A and can lead to bone growth in cats.
  • Although kittens can drink milk, cats become lactose intolerant as they mature and just like humans, they can experience pain and diarrhea after consuming milk or dairy products.
  • Raw meat and eggs aren’t only bad for humans, cats also shouldn’t eat undercooked meats and eggs. Sometimes these items carry salmonella and e coli which can be harmful to humans and pets with poor immune systems.
  •  Canned tuna diets on the surface may seem to make sense, but ultimately this could cause a high level of mercury in your cat’s blood, plus canned tuna doesn’t offer all of the nutrients your cat needs.
  • You may love them for the flavour they add to your food, but cats should never eat onions or garlic whether cooked or raw. These foods can cause weakness and anemia.
  • Dog and cat food may seem similar on the surface, but cat food has a higher protein content and different levels of vitamins and fatty acids. A small bite of dog food won’t be harmful to your cat, but it shouldn’t be fed exclusively.

As hard as you try to offer only foods that are good for your cat, there may be times when you’re not sure what he has consumed. If you see your cat experiencing breathing problems, tremors, diarrhea, weakness, etc, contact your vet and be prepared to bring stool or vomit samples to help identify the problem.
